My interest in painting is born out of my love of flowers and their movement through growth, flowering and being picked for a vase. A home full of flowers in the Summer is my favourite thing by a very long way.

The ritual of selecting flowers from the garden and placing them in a carefully chosen vessel to best show off their shape and style is so pleasing. This is also the beginning of the process, of watching, of examining and of feeling, which is the start of transferring something of the essence of their life into a painting.

Whether in the looser medium of oil or the more precise nature you get with gouache, the challenge for me is to capture the feeling of those flowers as they change over the course of the few hours or the days that I paint them.

I came to painting in the last few years between raising my children and renovating houses having originally worked in advertising and then developing our ceramics and textiles brand Hinchcliffe & Barber (H&B).  Founded in the 80s by my parents John Hinchcliffe & Wendy Barber we sold pottery and kitchen textiles in John Lewis and other retailers throughout the UK. Many of the jugs I paint full of flowers are our own designs from H&B.

My childhood homes, whether in Normandy or Dorset, were brimming with garden flowers, I am very lucky. They symbolise home, safety, hope and beauty all at once. My parents as painters, weavers, textile designers, and ceramicists laid the creative foundation on which I build today whether that's as a painter or in my love for interiors and gardening.
